FAN High School Fishing Championship as close as it gets on Lake Belton

Faith Angler Network High School Fishing held the first annual Series Championship and Banquet on Lake Belton hosted by BLORA.

With $5, cialis 000 in scholarship funds and plenty of Berkley Fishing products on line for the first annual FAN High School Championship, student anglers and parents alike were full of excitement and anticipation as they greeted the shores of BLORA on Lake Belton Saturday morning in preparation for take-off at safe light.

24 teams representing over 20 High Schools qualified through the points of 3 tournaments over the spring on central Texas lakes. All anglers received a special treat of soft plastics from volunteer boat captain Lance Hale donated by Papa Chops Rod and Reel Repair.

The weather would cooperate on this beautiful Saturday with a cool morning in the mid 50’s, and the afternoon sunshine delivered mild low 80 degree temperatures as the volunteers prepared for a full house attending the banquet with special guest Alton Jones (BASS Elite angler and 2008 BASS Master Classic Champion). We were also blessed with a local talented musician and Lake Travis High School fishing team member Tyler Anderson who performed for the crowd of over 250 student anglers, parents, grandparents and guests.

As the team ascended to the banks of BLORA at the 2PM check in, it was apparent fishing was tough and catching a limit of 5 bass was challenging for many. Team after team brought their fish to the scales to be measured, weighed, and then released back into Lake Belton without results being officially announced until the awards ceremony at the banquet which started just after the scales were closed.

Once all the teams weighed in their catch, everyone took a seat at the Live Oak Pavilion and were served a wonderful BBQ meal from the outstanding men and women of Cen-Tex Bass Hunters fishing club of Temple Texas and Kevin Stuart of LR Meat Company in Belton, TX.

The bucket raffle and silent auction had plenty of inviting items for anglers and families alike, and we want to thank those donors for their support as well. Thanks to Jack Allen’s Kitchen, Cover Three, Barley Swine, Odd Duck, Z-Tejas, Chili’s Restaurant, Alamo Draft House, Cedar Park Cinema, Berkley Fishing, Abu Garcia, Kistler Rods, and Academy Sports + Outdoors

We were honored to have Alton Jones as our guest speaker. Alton delivered a message that no matter how you finish a tournament, no matter what the conditions of the day, God wants to use you and that experience to glorify Him. The great days and the not so great days are all part of God’s design to build us for his purpose.

The moment everyone was waiting on was at hand and the FAN staff brought all 24 teams and captains to the stage to reveal the teams weights and recognize the top student anglers and award the first and second place teams their scholarship awards totaling $5000.00

This was as close of a competition as we have seen in many years with .01 of a pound separating first and second place. There can only be one winner though, and that team would be Cole Jones and Trent Lindsey representing Academy High School with a 4 fish limit weighing 9.27 pounds.

Cole and Trent each earned $1500.00 in Scholarship funds.

FAN HS 2014Champions

Coming in second place with 5 bass weighing 9.26 pounds (SOOO CLOSE) was the team of Cade Rucker and Clay Harbison fishing with the FAN High School Bass Team earning them $1000.00 each in scholarship funds.

 FAN HS 2nd place champions

Taking third place honors with five bass weighing 8.00 pounds even were Jake Read and Taylor Thomas from Vista Ridge High School. They were awarded a third place trophy and Berkley Fishing Products.

 Third place FAN HS championship

All the photos and full results can be seen here.

We would like to thank everyone for making this a fun and successful season. Without the great parents, anglers, and captains this would not be possible.

We want to thank all of our sponsors for your support and generosity. We are forever grateful!

Every fisherman/woman has dreams of catching a double digit bass, cialis and landing a personal best during a tournament. It is something that you remember for a lifetime.

Bringing the second event of the FAN High School Series to Lake Austin in April delivered both experiences to some very happy anglers.

Eighty-eight anglers with their captains launched their boats into the 1600 acre lake on the Colorado River system in the heart of Austin. You could see the excitement of the high school anglers that traveled from as far away as Sugar Land from the South, purchase and Era TX. to the north.

We prayed as the cool cloudy day displayed its early morning light, The National Anthem played, and then the anglers were off to test their strategies and make memories.

The clouds stayed with us throughout the day. However, that did not keep the parents and fans from the Austin 360 Bridge Park to root on their high school and favorite anglers.

With the crowd cheering, the anglers made their way to the stage to share their catches with the fans and supporters and to see how they would compare to the other competitors

Setting a new FAN High School Fishing Series weight record with, 20.10 pounds was the FAN High School Bass Team of Preston Franke and Andrew Zeigler, including a 7.97 pound “kicker fish” . They fished the mid lake area not traveling far from the launch area, working docs with  TX rigged craws, and the A-Rigged swim baits. Preston and Andrew’s win included each an Abu Garcia ProMax casting reel paired up to a Abu Garcia Varitas 7’ Medium Heavy action rod, and an impressive first place trophy. This win places them in the lead for Anglers of the Year race.

Captain Adam Artnak won the Academy Captain award of a $100 gift card.

FAN HS Lake Austin Winners

Weston Minzenmayer and Nathan Muilman also fishing with the FAN HS Bass Team take second place with 19.54 pounds and second big bass of the day weighing 9.08 pounds. Weston told us he caught his 9.08 pound bass in shallow water in a creek wash on a Texas rigged Berkley Chiggar Craw. They each took home a ProMax Rod and Reel Combo and a nice big trophy. Their Captain was Matt Kevil

FAN HS Austin 2nd place

Coming in a close third place spot was Chase Hux and Matt Nicholas from New Braunfels Christian Academy with 19.33. Their winning pattern was flipping shallow trees early and ledges later in the day. They each won a large Berkley Power Bait soft tackle system and trophies. Their Captain was Buck Hux.

FAN HS Austin 3rd place

Taking the Kistler Big Bass Award with a 10.23 pound largemouth and personal best was Dalton Denson with the FAN HS Bass Team. Dalton’s bass earned him a Kistler Pro Series fishing rod. Dalton was fishing with Joey Russell and they finished in 5th place overall- They were captained by Dalton’s dad, David Denson.

The weather would change during the morning from a thick layer of fog and drizzle to a summer like afternoon of 81 degrees and a moderate southern breeze snapping at 12mph as family and friends made their way to the 2PM weigh in dressed in team colors to cheer on their High School Bass Teams.

As the 2PM check in drew near, teams slowly made their way to the holding tanks and FAN stage to show off the results of their day on the water and the FAN staff and volunteers captured photos of their catch.

As in any bass fishing tournament anglers would be confronted with many challenges and not everyone would catch the 5 fish limit that was ultimately needed to win this event, however several teams did manage to dissect the conditions to do just that.

The team of Jake Read and Taylor Thomas from Vista Ridge High School brought in a 5 bass limit weighing in at 12.04 pounds including a 3.81 pound “kicker bass” to clinch the lead and win the first event of the 2014 qualifiers. Jake and Taylor with Captain Dale Read made the run up the Colorado River and used crank baits to catch their primarily largemouth bass creel. Jake and Taylor’s win included each an Abu Garcia ProMax casting reel paired up to a Abu Garcia Varitas 7’ Medium Heavy action rod, along with an impressive first place trophy.  Dale Read would win the Academy Sports and Outdoors Captain award of a $100 Academy Gift Card.FAN HS Travis Winners

Coming in second place with 4 fish weighing 9.50 pounds was the team of Nathan Wright and Evan Coleman and Captain Allen Taylor representing Rouse High School. Although their morning started off with motor problems they would not let that slow them down, they dropped the trolling motor and stayed focused on the task at hand- “Gotta find the fish”! And that’s what they did, and did in a big way; Nathan would land the biggest bass of the day with his largemouth bass tipping the scales at 5.03 pounds giving him the Kistler Rods Big Bass award taking home a 7’ medium heavy Kistler Pro Series rod. They also were awarded a pair of 7’ medium heavy Abu Garcia Veritas spinning rods paired to Abu Garcia Cardinal Spinning reels, and their second place trophies.

Wrapping up the third place position with an 8.83 pound five fish limit was the team of Brent Sunvison and Harrison Lansdale representing the FAN HS Bass Team with Jim Sunvison as captain. They deployed several methods to fill their live will including crank baits and soft plastics.
