The Retired Colonels Team of Bill Shelnutt IX and David Titus make a statement on Lake Travis and win with 19.12 pounds. And a whopping 4 pound advantage over the second place team.

The Pre-Tournament meeting and Dinner was a complete success at Hill Country Bible Church NW, with special guest Mike Hastings and a complete BBQ meal from Rudy’s Country Store and Bar B Que. Mike presented a great question and insight to that question “How do I know if I will go to Heaven” Thanks Mike for the simple approach to this heavy topic.

Saturday April 28th would start off nice and cool in the morning; however, in true April tradition as the sun came up so did the wind. And with 25 mile gusts, the day would test most teams on the water.

With 30 teams competing for points and over $4300.00 in cash, this would be a nice payday for the top 6 teams that place in the money.

And a great payday it was for Bill Shelnutt and David Titus who has been fishing with us since our first tournament back in 2004. Today would be their day to win it all.

Bill told me that David went out a few weeks earlier and hit the lower end with no luck finding decent fish, and during the official practice on Friday they focused on mid lake and “Still was not happy with the fish we were catching” Bill said, “so we decided to head further up the lake to Briar Cliff where we caught a nice fish and left the area for tournament day”

Bill stated that they drew boat 20 and by the time they got to that area, there was another boat sitting there “so we fished the other direction”. This turned out to be a good decision as they caught 3 keepers on this ledge fishing into the back of the cove. This is where Bill would connect with his first 6 pounder throwing a black and blue craw in about 4 foot of water. Bill stated, “we had a limit by 9:30 and started culling up and praising God”. After a few more culls in the same area Bill would catch his second 6 pounder on spinner bait on the same ledge.

I knew they had a great day when I saw them walking to the scales with big smiles and a big bag of fish.

Their efforts would send them home with a $1600 pay day including the $500 Texas Boat World winner bonus. Not a bad payday for 30 teams.

We had 30 teams participate on the third stop of the Faith Angler Network Trail –

Jason Stafford and John Ratliff Win the Faith Angler Network Lake LBJ event with 18.65 pounds

What a wonderful day to be on the water, with calm winds and mid 80 degree weather made the FAN tournament on Lake LBJ one to remember, especially after the near freezing event we had a month earlier.

It was even a more excited day for the Team of Jason Stafford of Burnett, TX and his partner John Ratliff of Kingsland, TX. As they would ultimately bring in the heaviest limit of bass at 18.65 pound include the big bass of the day weighing in at 8.7 pounds.

Jason told me “There was something special going on that day” “During the Friday evening meeting we were challenged to ask God to revel himself to us and before we took off I said a prayer, I need some help today” Jason told me that they had not planned on fishing this year, due to his wife is expecting their first child and the funds were had to come by, although he really likes fishing LBJ and wanted to fish the FAN tournament. “The whole day was different “Jason said. “ We were fishing some docks, and while I was trying to get a good angle a particular dock. John cast off the other side and got bit right away, then cast again and other keeper took his bait. We stumbled open a small rock pile that we never knew about” Jason continues to tell how this day was just different, “We went to another area that usually produces one or two small fish, and I have never caught anything over 3 pounds. Well, today the first fish we pulled out of this area was our biggest bass and the biggest bass of the tournament”. Jason told me they primarily fished in 6” to 6’ of water all day.

Jason concluded with the same statement he started “There was something special about this day, I asked God for some extra help today and we ended up winning “

Jason also added “I really enjoy fishing with FAN, out of all the events we fish FAN makes us feel like more than just a boat number, we really enjoy everyone, and Jeff and the staff treat everyone right”

Jacky is an avid tournament angler and knows our needs better than any. Offering authorized warranty and non-warranty repair and service for Minn Kota and MotorGuide trolling motors, complete electronics rigging and the latest and greatest in fishing tackle, Fish Finders Marine has you covered. We know there may be a couple of places to get your trolling motor serviced, but if you want it done right the first time you’d better take it to Jacky’s.

Although trolling motor repairs keep him busy throughout the year, Jacky also spends quite a bit of time rigging electronics like graphs and flashers. Additionally, he has a real passion for fish care and leads the charge in educating anglers in this critical piece of our sport. Anyone who has ever been in Jacky’s shop, or met him on the tournament trail, has heard what we endearingly call “the lecture”. Proper use of release products, attention to livewell temperature and use of a properly installed and maintained oxygen system are a must in Jacky’s book.

Jacky told us recently,

“As interest in the sport grew, so did the amount of space dedicated to tackle.”

As more and more local sticks began frequenting Fish Finders, Jacky quickly recognized the obsession for select tackle and really describes his shop better than we could.

“I saw an interest in enthusiast grade products and decided to focus on a combination of premium products and those specifically requested by tournament anglers. What I wanted to create with my tackle store is more of a boutique for the tournament angler, and not a superstore of bulk items carried in your large retail chains.”

Jacky knew anglers wanted a place they could go and buy proven fishing tackle from someone who knew what was working on a particular body of water at any given time, so he answered the call. With special run colors of Zoom plastics, up to 75 colors of Norman crank baits, several makes and models of both hard and soft swim baits and hard to find specialty items like the Aaron Martens Scrounger and Swarming Hornet Drop Shot Fish Heads, Jacky has what others don’t.

Fish Finders is also a favorite haunt of many local anglers and a place to hang out when you want to mingle with some of the best sticks in Central Texas. On our most recent visit we ran into Matt Hill and got the inside scoop from his trip down to Mexico. Matt and his partner Trey Webb finished second in overall AOY points in the 2009 Bass Champs Central Region and were invited to fish the International Challenge at Sugar Lake. They finished 5th out of 24 teams and helped to bring the cup back to the US with a two day total of 54.46 pounds!

So whether your trolling motor needs a tune up, you need a new graph installed, need to pick up some baits for your next tournament or just want to hang out and talk fishing, swing by Fish Finders Marine and talk to Jacky.
