What an exciting end to the FAN South Division 2021-2022 season! Going into this final Qualifier on April 2nd, there were only 3 points separating 1st and 2nd place for Angler of the Year, and Choke Canyon set the stage for the ultimate showdown with 64 teams competing for their last chance at a Championship spot.
In a come-from-behind performance, the team of Ace Gass and Ty Grounds (Captain Allen Gass) from Llano Fishing Team pulled out a HUGE win along with Big Bass of the day. They weighed in 22.05 lbs with a beautiful 8.98 lb. Big Bass, earning them Kistler Graphite Series Rods for 1st Place and another one for Big Bass.
The Boerne Greyhounds team of Logan Gonzalez and Judd Lozano (Captain Shawn Rust) took second place with a 18.36 lb. bag and took home Kistler reels as well as their trophy.
Right on their tails were another Boerne Greyhounds team. Kooper Counts and Devin Calderon (Captain Brendan Kennell) were less than a pound behind them with 18.08 lbs. who were awarded trophies and Abu Garcia reels.
Rounding out the Top 10% and securing a spot in the Championship were:
4th Place – George Parks and Jacob Renelt (Vista Ridge) 17.33
5th Place – Lane Carpenter and Aaden Thomas (Guardians Bass Club) 16.37
6th Place – Lane Matter and Tucker Rust (Boerne Greyhounds) 16.15
7th Place – Barrett Clay and Eric Walker (Liberty Hill) 16.10
When the dust settled and the final fish were weighed, the team of Cooper Kennell and Eli Christian (Bass Club of Champions) narrowly held on to their points lead to secure their title of the 2021-2022 FAN South Division Anglers of the Year! They both earned a $750 scholarship, a $250 voucher for Berkley or Abu Garcia products along with the FAN OT Wear AOY fishing jersey. Congratulations to Cooper and Eli for an amazing season!
Congratulations to all who qualified for the Championship on Lake Conroe this season! It’s going to be a great one!
